FLATIRON BUILDING

The Flatiron Building (apparently, America's #4 most loved building) was designed by Daniel Burnham and Frederick P. Dinkelberg and opened in 1902. An early example of the steel-framed skyscraper, this structure uses design cues from classical design that were common at the time period.

Specifically, the designers intended for the revolutionary tall structure to use similar proportions to classical column orders, with the first 4 floors serving as the “pedestal”, floors 5-17 is the “shaft” and the remaining floors being the “capital”.

For our presentation of this iconic structure, we decided to alter the structure to more closely correspond with the architect's original intention for the building, without the glass “cowcatcher” on the first floor and without the (oddly blank) final floor. We believe that this better conveys the original design intent, and gives a glimpse beyond the scaffolding that has covered this icon since 2019.
